Baby Safe Program: Virtual classes


The Baby Safe Program online (virtual) program was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, when on-site parenting education classes at maternity hospitals were suspended and moved to an online platform. We are continuing to offer this option, in addition to our face-to-face, Small Group classes in 2024.  

The Baby Safe Program Online consists of a series of three virtual classes (modules):

Module 1
Module 2 Module 3
Safe Sleeping to reduce the risk of SUDI, including SIDS Recognising and responding to an unwell baby  Baby Basic Life Support (Baby CPR) and Baby First Aid

We also have a Safe Sleeping for Preterm and Sick Babies class for parents and family members preparing to take their baby home from the Neonatal Intensive and/or Special Care Nursery.


Baby Safe Program- Premium Virtual Package

We have an exciting virtual option: The Baby Safe Program- Premium Virtual Package. The package comprises: all three virtual classes, the Baby Safe Program Video Series, and the Baby Basic Life Support Fridge magnets. Cost: $275 per couple- bundle and save!

Safe Sleeping

Module 1- Suitable from 28 weeks of pregnancy

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to create a safe sleep environment for your newborn baby from birth to one year of age
  • Safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI)
  • Safe wrapping (swaddling) for sleep and to promote normal hip development
  • Use of a safe sleeping bag
  • Bedding and bedding amount 
  • Dressing your baby for sleep 
  • Avoiding thermal stress (over-heating)
  • Nursery products that are not recommended and are unsafe for babies
  • How to determine which nursery products are safe for your baby


Preterm babies in NICU or SCN:

If your baby is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICU) or Special Care Nursery  (SCN), or has recently been discharged from NICU/SCN, please book the Safe Sleeping for Preterm Babies: Transition from NICU/SCN to home class. 

Recognising an unwell baby- Virtual class

Recognising and responding to an unwell baby

Module 2: Suitable from 32 weeks of pregnancy

In this class, you will learn:

  • Normal well baby behaviour
  • Behavioural cues your baby may be becoming unwell
  • How and when to take your baby’s temperature and interpret the results
  • Fever and other variations of normal temperature
  • Normal breathing and concerning breathing
  • Colour
  • Baby rashes
  • Jaundice
  • Vomiting and possetting  
  • Crying, unsettled babies ('colic') 
  • When to seek help if you are concerned about your baby
  • Where to find evidence-based health care information for babies




Baby Basic Life Support- Virtual class

Baby Basic Life Support (Baby CPR) & Baby First Aid

Module 3- Suitable from 32-34 weeks of pregnancy or in the first 6 months after your baby is born

In this class, you will learn: 

  • When to call 000 for an ambulance
  • Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR)
  • Management of choking on milk 
  • Management of choking on food or a small object
  • Management of febrile convulsions
  • Button battery ingestion
  • Bath and water safety


Safe Sleeping for Preterm and Sick Babies

Safe Sleeping for Preterm and Sick Babies

The transition from NICU/SCN to home

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to create a safe sleep environment for preterm baby from birth to one year of corrected age to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) including SIDS
  • Sleep practices that need to change once baby is discharged home from 
  • Bedding and bedding amount 
  • Avoiding thermal stress (over-heating) 
  • Safe cot
  • Dressing baby for sleep 
  • Car travel - car capsules and seats for preterm and low birth weight babies
  • Use of baby slings and carriers
  • Unsafe nursery products for babies


This class is only suitable for parents and family members of babies currently in, or recently discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN).

If your baby has not been born yet or has not needed NICU/SCN admission, please book the Safe Sleeping class (Module 1).

Virtual class duration: 

Each class runs for 2 hours with question time at the end of each class. 


What to expect:

Each class is held via ZOOM, in small groups, live and interactive with A/Professor Rose Boland or Narelle Wiseman.

ZOOM can be access from a computer, lap top, tablet device or your smart phone.

You will be able to talk to us during the class, see us on your screen and ask questions during the class and at the completion of the class.

You will receive resources for each topic after the class.


Bookings:

All bookings and payments are made via a dedicated Eventbrite booking page- see the links above.

You can book all three modules or any combination that you wish. You can also book a combination of online and face-to-face classes.

Grandparents and other family member are welcome to book a position any of these classes.
